HOW TO BOOST YOUR VITAMIN C LEVELS

We all know that boosting and optimising your vitamin C intake is key to a strong immune system to help ward off sickness and bugs.

But …

Do we really know why our body needs it, what foods contain the highest levels of vitamin C, and how much we should be taking?

In this blog, I’m going to give you the in’s and out’s so you can hit the ground running.

WHAT DOES VITAMIN C DO?

Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid has many benefits to the human body such as:

  • Supports collagen formation for the function of blood vessels, bones, and cartilage
  • Supports collagen formation for the function of healthy skin, gums, and teeth
  • Supports the nervous system and immune system
  • Helps protect cells from oxidative stress
  • Reduces tiredness and fatigue
  • Supports recovery during and after intense exercise
  • Helps heal wounds

Since vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, it’s so important we consume sufficient amounts every day.

WHAT FOODS CONTAIN THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS OF VITAMIN C

Oranges, where the ‘go to’ staple food for plenty of vitamin C. Don’t get me wrong, they still are a super source but there’s other solid food sources too such as:

  • Broccoli
  • Grapefruit
  • Cherries
  • Blackcurrants
  • Strawberries
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Lemons
  • Kale

HOW MUCH DAILY VITAMIN C SHOULD I TAKE?

The NHS advises adults aged 19 to 64 need 40mg of Vitamin C a day s an absolute  minimum. However you can take much higher doses Eg 5000mg / day for optimal health and in times of illness , but you need to build the dose up slowly to ensure bowel tolerance.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONSUME VITAMIN C?

My preferred way for you to consume your daily vitamin C is via real food, backed up by a quality supplement for added support when needed.CLICK HERE  for the Vitamin C supplement that I use and recommend

As a reminder, since this vitamin cannot be stored in the body, you have to ensure it’s a part of your diet every day, whether that be through fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C or by taking a daily vitamin C supplement.
